Creating Jobs by Conserving Public Lands and Working Lands

About This Event
America’s public lands have been the source of raw materials that power this nation, such as timber, minerals, and oil and gas. Likewise, America’s working farms, ranches, and forests have provided the food, fiber, and wood that have helped make this country prosperous. But a lesser-known story is that the conservation and restoration of public lands and our working lands also creates jobs and supports the rural communities closest to them. Jobs from recreation and tourism, hunting and fishing, restoration and sustainable forest management, and policies provide employment for rural communities hardest hit by the Great Recession.
Conservation of public lands currently supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, examples of which will be discussed by the distinguished guests. The Center for American Progress will release a new report detailing the policies that our leaders must support in order to build upon success in this type of job creation. Likewise, our working lands provide jobs and enormous public benefits by providing clean water, clean air, open space, and wildlife habitat.
