On the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s work to organize sanitation workers in Tennessee, the Center for American Progress Action Fund is releasing new quantitative data that show that strong unions are the foundation for a strong middle class.
Among the findings is that an increase in union presence has a slightly greater positive impact on the middle class than an increase in college graduation rates. The quantitative analysis shows that when unions decline, so does the middle class through a state-by-state analysis. The examples of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, and Hawaii in particular clearly show the correlation between the strength of unions and the health of the middle class in those states.
