ADVISORY: Implementing the Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 11:00am – 12:30pm

WASHINGTON, D.C.—It is long past time to repeal the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" law that bans openly gay men and women from serving in the military. Now that the administration has called for an end to the policy, the change must be decided upon and implemented as quickly as possible. In doing so, it is critical that the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" not be perceived as a complicated puzzle requiring complex solutions.

On March 23, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host a panel of experts to discuss what should be fairly limited and manageable administrative, bureaucratic, and legal changes that must be made to the military’s internal regulations dealing with the training, conduct, housing, benefit, and other relevant topics to ensure the new policy is implemented smoothly. CAPAF Senior Fellow Lawrence Korb will introduce a keynote speech by Senator Mark Udall, co-sponsor of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010. Korb will then host a panel consisting of former Virginia Governor, Senator, and Marine Corps officer Charles Robb; former Judge Advocate General for the Navy, Admiral John Hutson; and former Secretary of the Army Louis Caldera on a panel to speak on implementing a repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell."

The event will also serve as a release of the Center for American Progress’s new report, "Implementing the Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’"
