Trump ally Gordon Sondland implicated Trump directly

The testimony of Gordon Sondland, Donald Trump’s hand-picked Ambassador to the EU, was absolutely devastating for Donald Trump. Sondland established two key points that shatter Trump’s flimsy defense arguments:

  • He confirmed that Trump directed the entire effort: “We all understood that if we refused to work with Mr. Giuliani, we would lose an important opportunity to cement relations between the United States and Ukraine. So we followed the president’s orders.”

Defense Department official Laura Cooper also delivered testimony that completely discredited one of Congressional Republicans’ main defenses of Trump: that the Ukrainians never knew that aid was being withheld. Cooper testified that the Ukrainians knew as early as July 25—the day of Trump’s infamous call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

  • David Holmes: Holmes, a State Department aide, testified that he overheard a phone call between Sondland and Trump during which they discussed investigations that Trump wanted Ukraine to open into Trump’s political opponent.
  • Fiona Hill: Hill is a top official on the NSC. She testified to Congress that Trump would not meet with the president of Ukraine until the Ukrainian government started investigations into Trump’s political rivals.
