Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), this role will lead and oversee the management of the four-person Institutional Giving team; work closely with the CDO on building organizational relationships with foundations, corporations, and labor organizations; and manage the institutional engagement for a portfolio of policy teams.

The ideal candidate will possess an existing network of strong institutional relationships and demonstrated success in effectively leveraging organizational leadership for donor cultivation.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and directly manage a four-person Institutional Giving team, serving as coach, mentor, and strategic partner in achieving the team’s combined annual fundraising goal.
  • Manage a portfolio of 25–30 foundation prospects at the six- and seven-figure level, developing and executing tailored cultivation and solicitation strategies that grow unrestricted support and generate new programmatic funding.
  • Maintain deep fluency in foundation, corporate, and labor philanthropy—including emerging trends and recent giving patterns—to provide timely, informed counsel to executive leadership.
  • Collaborate with American Progress program staff and executive leadership to cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective institutional donors.
  • Develop and prepare a full range of foundation-facing materials, including letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports, grant agreements, acknowledgment letters, presentations, and donor correspondence.
  • Oversee comprehensive donor stewardship by tracking grant requirements and deadlines, managing funder communications, coordinating with program and finance staff to monitor grant expenditures, and leading monthly grant spending reconciliation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising or a related field, including a minimum of five years managing a foundation portfolio generating seven figures or more annually in philanthropic revenue.

  • Proven track record of building and leading high-performing fundraising teams, including hiring and coaching front-line development staff.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong portfolio of successful six- and seven-figure foundation grant proposals, reports, and budgets authored or coauthored.
  • Data-driven mindset with hands-on experience using CRM systems to manage portfolios, analyze fundraising performance, forecast revenue, and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines across a complex, fast-paced portfolio without sacrificing quality or attention to detail.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Deep commitment to the mission of American Progress and to advancing a broad progressive policy agenda.
