Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons is a senior fellow at American Progress. His work focuses on a wide range of issues related to the role of religion in American public life, including promoting a progressive vision of religious liberty and challenging the rise of authoritarian theocracy politics. He is also vice president of Programs and Strategy at Interfaith Alliance, where he directs the organization’s government affairs, policy analysis, and movement building work.
Prior to joining Interfaith Alliance in 2024, he worked at the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and helped lead its “Christians Against Christian Nationalism” campaign. Earlier in his career, he worked with national faith leaders on two high-profile issue advocacy campaigns: opposing the Muslim ban and passing comprehensive immigration reform. He served as the associate director of the Rights and Inclusion Collaborative at ReThink Media, where he worked to promote Muslim, Arab, Sikh, and South Asian rights. He was previously the faith coordinator at the National Immigration Forum, where he helped start the Evangelical Immigration Table. He was a fellow at American Progress from 2020-2022.
Graves-Fitzsimmons is the author of Just Faith: Reclaiming Progressive Christianity, published by Broadleaf Books in 2020. He writes regularly for MSNBC and his expertise on religion and public life has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post, the Associated Press, NBC News, FOX News, and more. His public speaking appearances include Aspen Institute’s Powering Pluralism Summit, Netroots Nation, and the Summit for Religious Freedom.
Graves-Fitzsimmons received his undergraduate degree from American University and his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, where he was the William Sloane Coffin Scholar. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Prophetic Leadership from Iliff School of Theology. He is an ordained Baptist deacon. He and his husband, both originally from Texas, now live in Washington, D.C.
