Stephanie Sutton serves as chief operating officer of American Progress, where she oversees the organization’s business, operational, and personnel functions.
With 20 years of experience building high-performing teams across government and in the nonprofit, private, and political sectors, Sutton most recently served as acting assistant secretary of the Bureau of Global Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. There, she led a $69 million, 350-person global team responsible for communicating U.S. foreign policy priorities.
Previously, as chief of staff for the State Department’s $1.5 billion, 5,000-person global public diplomacy team, she aligned resources with policy priorities, enhanced crisis planning, incorporated artificial intelligence into workflows, and created new internal communications channels. She has also held senior roles at Global Ties U.S. and Edelman.
Originally from Texas, Sutton began her career in politics after graduating with honors from Georgetown University. She lives with her family in Washington, D.C.
