Washington, D.C. — Today, a Senate vote to terminate the national emergency to impose global tariffs narrowly failed. Following the vote, Emily Gee, senior vice president for Inclusive Growth at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:
Today, Democrats overwhelmingly voted for lower prices and a more stable economy while Republicans overwhelmingly voted for higher costs and economic uncertainty by supporting Donald Trump’s reckless trade wars. Sen. Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) resolution would end the dubious “national emergency” that Trump is using to justify his massive new tariffs on friend and foe alike, which are throwing the economy into a tailspin. Elected officials of all parties are supposed to work for the American people. However, the vast majority of Republican senators showed, once again, that—rather than do what’s best for the country—they are beholden to a wannabe dictator who is happy to tank the economy at a whim.
