Last night, after the House abruptly cancelled its scheduled vote on Trumpcare (because they didn’t have the votes to pass it), President Trump said it’s now or never, pass Trumpcare or Obamacare’s going to live forever. So now Speaker Ryan—still stuck between a rock and a hard place—has scheduled the vote for today. It’s safe to say Ryan is having a worse week than you.
In attempt to get the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus on board with the bill, Ryan agreed to strip protections for some of the most basic health care needs like preventive care, maternity care, prescription drugs, and more. The longer this debate goes on, the less this bill looks like a health care plan and the more it looks like a tax cut for the wealthy.
ACTION OF THE DAY
Today is the day. Make calls. Tweet. Show up at a rally. Trumpcare is not dead yet. New vote counts are being reported every second, but the only thing we know for sure is it is going to come down to the wire. Here’s what you can do:
- Today: Call your member of Congress, tweet at every member on this list, share this toolkit with your friends—encourage everyone with a moderate representative to call, call, call!
- This weekend: Attend a rally near you. Events are taking place across the country this Saturday March 25th and Sunday March 26th at 12 PM local time. Find the events near you at ResistanceNearMe.org.
WHAT’S TRENDING
Broken Promises. They just keep coming from the Trump Administration. This morning, Trump approved the Keystone XL pipeline. The pipeline is bad for Americans and bad for the planet. It’s also bad for Trump’s “America first” claims. Approving the pipeline gives a foreign company a green light to send foreign oil through a pipeline made with foreign steel to be exported to foreign countries. In DC or New York? Show up to protest the pipeline tonight.
“Extreme Vetting.” In yet another move that makes America less American, the Trump Administration is reportedly demanding that U.S. embassies across the world ratchet up their security checks before issuing visas to tourists, business travels, and U.S. family members. The move is said to “increase the likelihood of denial for those seeking to come to America” and make it much harder for the average person to visit the United States.
#MissingDcGirls. Concerned DMV residents are looking for answers about a perceived increase in missing teenage African-American and Latina girls in the area. At least 11 teens have disappeared in D.C. just this month already. Now several D.C. lawmakers—concerned this might be tied to human trafficking—are demanding an FBI investigation to determine what exactly has been going on.
FACT CHECK
London. White House adviser Sebastian Gorka is using the recent terror attack in London to justify Trump’s Muslim ban. There’s one big problem: Prime Minister Theresa confirmed the assailant was British-born, not an immigrant.
GOOD NEWS
Antidotes. This weekend you can sooth your Trumpcare anxieties with whisky named after Hillary Clinton.
