“No. Nothing for the wall.”

It's another day in Trump's America—and another day to stand up for what's right. Get the facts to fight back.

Today is day 13 of President Trump’s government shutdown. Speaker Pelosi announced Democrats’ immediate intention to vote to reopen the government. Trump and Senate Republicans stood by their intention to keep it closed.

The 116th Congress was sworn in today. With it comes a new reality for President Trump: a powerful woman Speaker who can put him in check.

A few key things to know:

  • Democrats now control the House of Representatives. Their first order of business? Reopening the government. Next: Be a strong check on Trump.

There’s no doubt that Speaker Pelosi can go toe-to-toe with President Trump. In an interview aired this morning, when asked about giving Trump money for his ridiculous border wall, Pelosi answered firmly: “No. Nothing for the wall.”

Late last year, Democrats proposed H.R.1, the most sweeping package of anti-corruption reforms since Watergate. Now, as Democrats take control of the House, the bill will come to the floor for a vote.

Pressuring President Trump to let go of his so-called border “wall” to end the shutdown may prove difficult, but Sam Berger and Jesse Lee—both senior advisers at the Center for American Progress and former officials in the Obama White House—joined Thinking CAP to walk through how we got here, why this shutdown is different from others in the past, and who is helped (and harmed) by this political ploy.
