President Trump wants restaurant owners to be able to legally steal server tips

The U.S. Department of Labor is trying to eliminate a rule that prevents owners from stealing their workers’ tips. Essentially, Trump wants to let owners take tips away from their staff and pocket them instead.

The proposal would work like this: Employers could take the tips earned by employees, such as servers and waiters, provided they pay them the minimum wage. While employers could distribute the tips to other employees at the organization, employers could also keep the tips themselves. Employers would steal almost $6 billion from workers every year if this rule goes into effect, according to the Economic Policy Institute.

The Trump administration was so worried about bad publicity from this rule, that they hid their own data showing how much money workers would lose. Then they lied about it.

So what can you do? Well, it’s important to spread the word and tell Congress to stand up for workers by standing up to Trump. Trump is trying to keep this information hidden for a reason; he knows the more people that find out, the better chance we have of stopping tip stealing in its tracks.

So make sure your friends and family know that Trump is trying to let owners steal tips by sharing this information on social media. And click here to write your member of Congress and demand they hold Trump and his Department of Labor accountable.
