That’s what President Trump called former FBI Director James Comey in a wild interview with NBC’s Lester Holt. In the same interview—completely contradicting repeated claims from the White House, members of Congress, and conservative pundits—Trump also admitted that he fired Comey because of his investigation into Russia. To explain his decision Trump said, “And in fact when I decided to just do it I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.’”

Trump has consistently dismissed investigations into his ties to Russia as “fake news,” but nevertheless the FBI investigation appeared to have been heating up. Days before he was fired, Comey requested more resources for his Russia inquiry. And now we have confirmation from Trump himself that Comey was fired because of it. Watch this video to find out what Comey was investigating when he was fired.

ACTION OF THE DAY

Mother’s Day. This Sunday is Mother’s Day. But last week, the House of Representatives voted for a health care bill that makes being a mother a pre-existing condition and could lead to women being denied health insurance based solely on their gender. Trumpcare is especially bad for women. It guts Medicaid, defunds Planned Parenthood, undermines comprehensive health coverage (including maternity coverage), and even makes pregnancy a pre-existing condition. Add your name to this Mother’s Day card and we’ll deliver it to Rep. Paul Ryan and Sen. Mitch McConnell on Monday with our friends at Generation Progress and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

WHAT’S TRENDING

“Few exceptions.” This morning, Trump’s lawyer announced that Trump’s tax returns from the past 10 years show no “income of any type from Russian sources,” with few exceptions. To be clear “few exceptions” means there is income from Russian sources. And because Trump has still not released his tax returns there is no way for anyone to independently verify these claims. Add this to the long list of reasons we need Trump’s tax returns.

Voter Suppression. In light of Trump’s “Election Integrity” executive order, here are the 5 facts you need to know about voter suppression, which poses a real threat to our democracy unlike nonexistent “widespread voter fraud.”

Speak up. Every American deserves to have their voice heard. But not everyone is getting the chace to make their voice heard to their elected representative. That’s why former CMS Director Andy Slavitt is hosting town halls across the country to listen to people’s concerns about Trumpcare and the future of health care. Today he’s hosting a health care forum in Sierra Vista, Arizona, home of Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), one of the GOPers seen celebrating the end of affordable healthcare. RSVP here. UNDER THE RADAR

Kids call to #ActOnClimate. Stronger storms and heat waves and more sea level rise threaten our children’s rights to clean air, water, and a safe place to live and go to school. The next generation of Americans know what’s at stake. Watch this video to hear fourth-graders from Homestead, Florida – 30 miles south of Miami – ask Rep. Curbelo (R-FL), Sens. Nelson (D-FL) and Rubio (R-FL), and President Trump to protect their community and their future.
