More GOP Congressmen Confronted Over Obamacare
Just yesterday, we brought you predictions of a long, hot August for the GOP. It’s just a day later and the clips from across the country just keep pouring in.
One clip in particular should remind all of us progressives why we have been fighting for the security of health coverage for all Americans for decades, why we fought for Obamacare, and why we can’t let conservatives take us backward, which they have now tried to do at least 40 times in the House of Representatives alone.
Watch this grieving mother who wants to know why Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) wants to take away Obamacare:
McHenry also faced a grilling from another constituent who said he needs Obamacare to get health coverage, “We’ve got to have that!”
Watch the exchange:
On the other side of the ledger, the GOP’s civil war over Obamacare defunding also continues. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) was confronted by a Tea Party constituent over his unwillingness to sign on to the politically perilous, dead-end effort to shut down the government in order to try and defund Obamacare.
Echoing comments made by Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL), Cole explained that if the GOP shuts down the government, “troops in the field don’t get paid.” Cole added that a government shut down would be “politically dangerous” and also that he “[didn’t] think it would work.”
Finally, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) seems to have had his fill of the GOP’s dead-end crusade to repeal Obamacare. He derided the House’s 40 votes to repeal the law as “theatrics.” “You keep doing this over and over and over again and it doesn’t get anywhere,” Fortenberry added.
Fortenberry is right to be concerned. A new poll out yesterday showed that the GOP’s efforts to repeal and/or defund Obamacare are a political loser.
BOTTOM LINE: Americans on the right and the left are fed up with the GOP when it comes to Obamacare. Republicans have spent years making their anti-Obamacare bed and now they are going to have to lie in it.
