Summary
American Progress is seeking a Digital Strategy Associate to join CAP Action’s growing Digital Advocacy team. The team’s mission is to develop innovative and compelling social media content that builds the emotional and visual case for progressive policies and values.
The Digital Strategy Associate will work as part of the Digital Advocacy team’s Engagement unit to grow CAP Action-branded channels and find new audiences for American Progress’ ideas. Strong applicants for this position will be highly organized and detail-oriented with strong writing and communications skills. American Progress is looking to hire someone who can do a lot more than copy and paste talking points into tweets and Facebook posts. The ideal candidate will be excited by the challenge of producing engaging, compelling social content that helps advance the organization’s goals and meet target audiences where they are in terms of tone, substance, and platform—as well as tame the ever-evolving algorithms.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment where they will need to understand nuanced topics, multitask, set priorities, and quickly produce engaging content and copy. Social media experience, a strong news sensibility, familiarity with digital tools, a strong visual eye, and attention to detail are musts. This position will play a key role in planning and developing targeted cross-channel digital products and campaigns and be involved in strategic distribution planning for those projects.
The Digital Strategy Associate will be a team player who is interested in working with a diverse, interdisciplinary team to grow, educate, and engage audiences. This position works closely and collaboratively with policy teams and thought leaders to drive progressive conversations, inform and educate the public on center-left solutions, and grow and engage our online audience and impact through various digital channels.
American Progress is an independent, nonpartisan policy institute that is dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action.
Responsibilities:
- Manage, draft, produce, and publish content and copy for the CAP Action social media channels.
- Develop and implement social growth and engagement strategies for both planned campaigns and rapid-response moments.
- Identify digital strategies to find and grow audiences for CAP Action messaging, increasing awareness of these ideas within targeted high-value audiences.
- Work directly with creative and policy teams to pitch and produce social graphics, memes, and video content.
- Identify and share performance insights to inform American Progress’ engagement strategies.
- Actively participate in and contribute ideas to team brainstorms and planning meetings.
- Think outside the box when it comes to connecting trends on Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms to the organization’s strategic messaging priorities.
- Contribute to and maintain shared publishing calendars for CAP Action, utilized by multiple teams for ongoing scheduling and coordination.
- Contribute to coverage of major live events in concert with the Communications department, policy teams, and others.
- Maintain direct lines of communication and reporting across American Progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Two to three years of professional experience in social media or digital communications, ideally at a nonprofit, public policy, or political organization.
- Excellent writing skills, strong proofreading skills, and sound editorial and ethical judgment.
- A track record of running successful social media campaigns across platforms.
- A strong understanding of internet and meme culture and how to apply those findings to the team’s work.
- Experience deploying timely content during rapid-response scenarios.
- Familiarity with social media listening and analytics tools.
- Experience using social media to drive meaningful online and offline actions.
- Attention to detail and an ability to juggle multiple projects for different stakeholders.
- Openness to developing new skills and experimenting with new strategies and tactics.
