Summary

American Progress is seeking a Senior Fellow to provide thought leadership on economic issues and policy developments for the Economic Policy team. The Senior Fellow will contribute to American Progress’ efforts to develop and advance a policy agenda that includes affordability, economic growth, and economic mobility, and will be expected to identify opportunities to contribute impactful analysis and policy proposals consistent with the organization’s priorities.

The Senior Fellow will help manage American Progress’ relationships with key external stakeholders on economic policy issues, including leading economic experts, ally organizations, federal and state policymakers, and the media. This role will oversee and execute projects involving policy analysis, research, and writing, while driving collaboration across American Progress. In addition to leading work on economic policy, the Senior Fellow will contribute to crosscutting projects and serve as a public voice for a center-left interpretation of the economy through media appearances, public commentary, and engagement with policymakers. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of a broad range of economic policy issues, including an understanding of how current events relate to macroeconomic trends, financial markets, and labor markets. They should be familiar with policymaking processes at the federal, state, and local levels, and have established relationships with key experts in the field.

The successful candidate will be guided by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Economic Policy department and American Progress leadership to help set the strategic direction for economic policy.
  • Develop and produce policy proposals, including in collaboration with others on the Economic Policy team and other American Progress colleagues.
  • Represent American Progress to the public, media, and other outside groups and individuals on issues related to economics and economic policy.
  • Coordinate American Progress projects on economic issues, including facilitating cross-team collaboration and alignment with organization-level priorities.
  • Advise colleagues in crafting timely analyses, policy proposals, and rapid-response documents to influence policy outcomes.
  • Update American Progress staff regularly on news and events related to the economy.
  • Supervise and mentor staff on the Economic Policy team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Graduate degree in policy, law, or economics.
  • A strong track record of thought leadership and agenda-setting in economic analysis and policy development.
  • Experience in federal government, preferably at the White House or Treasury Department.
  • Command of a broad range of issues in economic policy; expertise in macroeconomic policy is a plus.
  • Established relationships with economic experts, policymakers, and advocates.
  • Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills, with experience with public speaking and writing.
  • Strong analytical skills and keen political awareness.
  • Collaborative attitude coordinating team-based work and experience mentoring junior staff.
  • Ability to balance a portfolio consisting of both longer-term projects and rapid-response policy briefs.
