Viviann Anguiano is the managing director of Higher Education at American Progress. Anguiano formerly served as director of education at the White House Domestic Policy Council during the Biden-Harris administration, where she led the former president’s policy development and implementation work across higher education. For nearly fifteen years, she has worked in government and advocacy roles to advance educational opportunities for the nation’s students, previously serving as deputy director of education and senior policy adviser for the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee under Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), respectively. During her tenure in the Senate, Anguiano led legislative efforts to improve college access and affordability. She also held advocacy roles at American Progress and in various state and local advocacy organizations in California. She began her career in higher education in her hometown of Chicago serving as a college adviser with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and founded Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago. Anguiano earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology at Loyola University Chicago and a master’s in education policy and management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants and first-generation college graduate.
