Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress Action Fund will host Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) for a discussion on Russia’s interference in our election and the elections of our European allies. Sen. Shaheen—a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations—will focus on the need to get to the bottom of what happened and take steps to ensure our democracy is not attacked again while stressing that this is a challenge facing Democrats and Republicans alike.
Russian interference in our election and the elections of our European allies poses a serious challenge to U.S. national security and the international global order. Russian efforts to disrupt democracy are part of a deliberate foreign policy strategy to undercut the United States and its allies. Russia is exploiting the openness of liberal democracies to undermine democratic governance from the inside by pursuing an active measures—or aktivniye meropriyatiya—strategy that uses the country’s highly capable espionage tools not merely to acquire intelligence but to influence events.
