Washington, D.C. — On Monday, July 15, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will deliver an address at the Center for American Progress Action Fund on ending the current gridlock in the Senate that is harming our nation’s ability to address key challenges.
Washington is paralyzed by gridlock, and nowhere is this more true than in the U.S. Senate. Filibusters have become the norm. An unprecedented level of obstruction by Senate Republicans has prevented the president from having the qualified team he needs to grow our economy. Nominees to lead the Labor Department, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Environmental Protection Agency languish without any certainty that they will receive up-or-down votes. The National Labor Relations Board, which has sole authority to enforce many key labor laws, is on the verge of ceasing to function.
