Washington, D.C. — In his inaugural speech, President Donald Trump promised to lift up the “forgotten men and women” who have been left behind—the same platform that propelled him to victory in 2016. But his proposed budget released in May reveals that his priorities lie with corporations and the 1 percent—at the expense of nearly everyone else. Trump proposed deep cuts to Social Security and Medicaid; slashed education, workforce training, and job-creating infrastructure investments; gutted protections for clean air and water; and even took food away from children and families—all to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and corporations.
Congress will soon consider its own budget, which could endorse many of the same policies contained in the Trump budget. On Tuesday, June 13, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host Reps. John Yarmuth (D-KY), Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) for a discussion of the human consequences of these budget cuts, what’s at stake for everyday Americans, and how to champion an agenda that works for everybody instead of just the 1 percent.
