PRESS CALL ADVISORY: LGBT Issues and Potential Republican Candidates for President in 2012

Washington, D.C. — Many of the potential Republican presidential candidates—former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann—will be speaking at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel in Iowa at the Pastor’s Policy Briefing Conference from March 24–25. In anticipation of more antigay rhetoric from candidates and other speakers at the conference, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will unveil a new interactive, “Conservatives and LGBT Issues,” which will be continually updated through the course of the election season to include new quotes from each candidate on issues of importance to the LGBT community.

Please join Bishop Gene Robinson, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, and Jeff Krehely, Director of the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, to discuss the features of CAP Action’s new interactive, the LGBT issues at stake in the 2012 presidential election, and the changing electoral landscape that is bringing more people of faith to ally themselves with the LGBT community.

A new ABC News and Washington Post poll indicated that not only do 53 percent of Americans support gay marriage, but there have been significant gains in the religious community with a 23-point increase among white Catholics, a 16-point increase among nonevangelical white Protestants, and an 11-point increase among evangelicals.
