RELEASE: MAGA Republicans Are Banning Books, Not Guns, New CAP Action Analysis Shows

Washington, D.C. — As children return to their classrooms this fall, many are entering schools in states where it is now easier to carry a gun than it was earlier in the year. Rather than passing laws to keep children safe, MAGA extremists across the country are banning books—not guns—from our nation’s classrooms. A new CAP Action analysis looks at this alarming trend, finding that Republican-led states have enacted more than 20 bills to weaken gun laws this year, and since fall 2021, they have banned more than 1,000 books in schools. Meanwhile, following mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas—the latter of which left 19 children and two adults dead—Democrat-led states have passed 30 gun safety bills to protect children and communities.

“From Newtown, Connecticut, to more recently in Uvalde, we’ve witnessed the devastating consequences that easy access to guns can have on children, teachers, and schools,” said Jerry Parshall, senior director of the Safety and Justice Campaign at CAP Action. “Rather than passing basic, sensible gun safety laws, MAGA extremists are banning books and making it even easier for people who commit crimes to access firearms.”
