RELEASE: National Security Leadership Alliance Launches to Promote Progressive Security Vision, Fight Trump’s Recklessness

Washington, D.C. — With reckless and dangerous ideas about national security entering the discourse around the 2016 election, a group of distinguished experts is coming together to launch the National Security Leadership Alliance, or NSLA. Led by a powerful group of experienced leaders including former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Gen. John Allen (ret), former Attorney General Eric Holder, former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Sen. Carl Levin, Adm. James Stavridis (ret), and former National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, the Alliance will offer a consistent, policy-focused vision of America’s role in the world and promote strong and pragmatic U.S. leadership to tackle today’s complex challenges.

“American leadership is paramount not just to our security, but to that of our allies and friends around the world,” said Adm. Stavridis, the 16th supreme allied commander of NATO. “Our own leaders must be accountable to the values that make America the global force it is today, and be in front on the security challenges we face. That requires strong, deliberate, and effective leadership, as we aim to strengthen our alliances, manage changes around the globe, and promote an America that has yet to see its best years.”

Housed at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, the NSLA will provide aggressive response to the reckless rhetoric espoused during the election cycle, including rhetoric coming from Donald Trump. Whether it be building a wall, blocking an entire religion from entering the United States, doubling-down on torture or promising “there will be nothing left” after he bombs his chosen target of the day, Trump has taken a position that threatens America’s security and place in the world.

The Alliance will support principles laid out at www.nationalsecurityleadershipalliance.org, and elevate national security as a key point of contrast with much of the divisive fear-mongering already dominating the 2016 election cycle. Videos by several of the co-Chairs are available on the website.

“Given global unrest and the recent events in Orlando, our country’s national security should be paramount in the national debate,” said Neera Tanden, President and CEO of CAP. “We are thrilled that the National Security Leadership Alliance will address the need for strong, steady, and consistent leadership that can keep America safe by leading the world through strong alliances, not alienating them.”

Along with the launch of the NSLA, CAP Action is releasing “Too Reckless to Be Commander-In-Chief,” an issue brief detailing the what would be at stake if some of Donald Trump’s policy recommendations were carried into the White House. It is coupled with a video, “Why You Don’t Want Donald Trump Controlling America’s Military Arsenal.”

The NSLA will work to make the case to the American people that the progressive road map on national security is the right one, and the leaders who are speaking up today have the best plan to keep America safe and expand our leadership around the world.
