Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress Action Fund released a new column examining Vice President Kamala Harris’ decades-long efforts to promote public safety, make the justice system fairer, and combat gun violence. The piece highlights innovative programs and strategies Harris has championed to help victims of crime get the resources and support they need, reduce recidivism, and keep guns out of the hands of people who could be a danger to themselves or their communities. This includes helping pass the first federal law to curb gun violence in nearly 30 years.
“Vice President Harris knows how to keep Americans safe because she’s done so for decades, as a prosecutor, as the chief law enforcement officer of California, and as vice president,” said Lindsey McLendon, senior fellow for Criminal Justice Reform at CAP Action. “Vice President Harris’ evidence-based approach to holding people who commit serious crime accountable and preventing crimes from happening before they occur has yielded results, with crime dropping to a record low in California while she was attorney general and homicide falling at historic rates under her leadership as vice president.”
