Washington, D.C. — Tonight, former President Donald Trump announced that he will be running for president again in 2024. Following the announcement, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:
Just days ago, voters across the country issued a clear rejection of Trump’s radical, violent, racist, anti-democratic MAGA movement. They rejected MAGA Republican candidates at every level of government, from state legislatures to governors’ mansions to the U.S. Senate.
These historic results make it clear that MAGAism is a dying but dangerous cancer that must be stamped out. Defeating MAGAism is not about which political party wins an election, but a question for every American of what we value and want to preserve. Trump has only succeeded because of his enablers and beneficiaries in the Republican Party, in the press, and at social media companies. All Americans must pledge to hold them accountable this time around. No one gets a pass on promoting fascism.
Right now, Republican leaders have a choice. They can join their fellow Americans and turn the page on this dark chapter in American history, or they can burn down the last vestiges of their integrity. I remain confident that Americans will defeat all that Trump represents in 2024. That’s who we are.
