Washington D.C. – Today, in an Arizona courtroom, the Department of Justice rightly asserted its responsibility to set and enforce immigration policy by challenging the legality of Arizona’s immigration control law.

Statement by Angela M. Kelley, Vice President for Immigration Policy and Advocacy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund:

"The immigration debate didn’t begin and won’t end in Arizona. The multiple lawsuits against the law certainly speak to the flaws in the measure, but the underlying problem is bigger than Arizona or any state can take on. The public deserves better than it’s gotten from its federal government and its failure to act has political and policy ramifications.

As a policy matter, Arizona and other states’ frustration levels are boiling over and creating more problems than solutions. Politically, immigration is the top concern of Latino voters in key states where competitive statewide races will be held in November, according to recent polling. And a solid majority of Latinos now say they ‘definitely’ plan to vote in November. States that are contemplating similar anti-immigrant measures should heed the warning signs before turning their backs on the fastest-growing segment of the electorate."

Friday, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host a discussion on recent developments inside and outside the courtroom.
