Washington, D.C. — Today, the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a 160-year old abortion ban that predates Arizona’s statehood, stripping women of their right to control their own futures. In response, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:
Donald Trump engineered the end of Roe v. Wade and bragged about it just yesterday. Because of him, MAGA extremists are resurrecting a Civil War-era abortion ban in the state of Arizona that near universally bans all abortion care—including in cases of rape or incest—stripping women and families of the ability to control their own destinies and putting doctors at risk of being jailed for providing needed health care. This MAGA abortion ban, which Donald Trump has said “must” be enforced, will put women’s lives in danger and could risk the fertility of many people who desperately want to become parents. It’s cruel, it’s inhumane, and it must not stand.
Donald Trump intentionally opened Pandora’s box in vowing to only appoint justices who would overturn Roe, and now our worst fears are becoming reality. We should all expect MAGA extremists to continue their push for a national ban on abortion.
