STATEMENT: Daniel J. Weiss, Senior Fellow, on Impending Senate Passage of “Cash for Clunkers”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – "We are pleased that the Senate plans to pass the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Program, or CARS, H.R. 3435, also know as "cash for clunkers." The additional CARS funds will help jumpstart auto sales while cutting oil use. The first round of the program has already helped struggling auto workers and car dealers. This initiative is critical since 1 in 10 American jobs is related to the auto industry. The cash for clunkers program is the type of well-designed, effectively targeted economic stimulus that the nation sorely needs for a successful economic recovery. Senate passage of additional CARS funds today will advance this goal."
