Washington, D.C. — Today, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump addressed the Marcellus Shale Coalition conference in Pittsburgh. Trump continued to make a case for undermining key environmental protections set forth under President Barack Obama.
The Center for American Progress Action Fund Associate Director for Climate Communications Jillian Murphy issued the following statement:
Today, Donald Trump again made clear that he rejects what the majority of scientists and experts all agree is the greatest threat to our planet: climate change.
Over the past 10 years, in response to the overwhelming scientific evidence and rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, the nation has made tremendous gains in cutting dangerous carbon pollution. From the Clean Power Plan to the Paris climate agreement, Americans can now see a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable future within their grasp. A Trump presidency would spell danger for this progress, as well as threaten the foundational safeguards that keep our air and water clean.
America’s environmental legacy will be in jeopardy if we choose a path that denies the existence and impacts of climate change and instead embraces a toxic position that will strengthen dirty energy. The cost of reversing measures to address climate change and set the nation on a low-carbon emissions roadmap will not only affect countless communities but also the U.S. economy.
The United States has already spent $67 billion on disaster assistance in the past 10 years. Extreme weather—an unquestionable consequence of global warming—will continue to plague American families. Trump’s position is clear: In protecting dirty energy corporations, he will put at risk our progress, our communities, and our generations to come.
