Washington, D.C. — Today, House Republicans voted to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. In response, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:
When Donald Trump provoked a cavalry of supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol, Republicans turned a blind eye. Now, they want to impeach President Biden over a load of lies and debunked conspiracy theories? This is absolutely ridiculous. We all witnessed how Republicans treated evidence of Trump’s continuous law-breaking, corruption, and betrayal of his oath to the Constitution. They shamefully and idly stood by his side.
Pursuing this baseless inquiry is further evidence that MAGA Republicans have taken over the Republican Party and, like their figurehead, are more focused on punishing their political enemies than doing anything to help the American people. This is a clear warning sign to the American people: Even when Trump is not in power, Republicans willingly do his political bidding—and they’ll do the same if he returns to the Oval Office.
