Washington, D.C. — Earlier today, the House sent the Senate impeachment articles for U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. In response, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:
Impeaching Secretary Mayorkas does nothing to make us safer or fix our immigration system. This impeachment should be seen as nothing more than a stunt to distract from the fact that the MAGA caucus wants chaos at the border. They had the chance to pass a robust, bipartisan border security bill. Instead, they caved to Donald Trump.
After inheriting a chaotic, rudderless department with six leadership changes in four years culminating in an unlawfully appointed acting secretary, Mayorkas steadied the ship and restored integrity to the Department of Homeland Security. Notably, he worked across the aisle, including in support of increased enforcement resources. But rather than work in good faith with Mayorkas to solve the issues they say they want to address, the MAGA caucus is wasting the Senate’s time with this sham impeachment while harming our national security and hampering the administration’s efforts to secure the border. The border crisis was decades in the making, and securing the border and fixing our immigration system requires good-faith, congressional legislating, not petty political theater.
