Washington, D.C. — John Podesta, founder of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement on the House of Representatives’ passage of the rules package to move forward on President Joe Biden’s jobs plans:
It is a monumental task to address the fundamental challenges that have held back American families and economic growth, and left our country to the ravages of climate change, for decades. But the lesson of the House moving forward on the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better agenda is simple: In unity, there is strength.
Those who came together today can tell their constituents that they have voted to move forward on lowering prescription drug, health care, child care, and home care costs; on paid leave and middle-class tax cuts instead of tax cuts for billionaires; on rebuilding our infrastructure for the next century and building a new generation of clean energy manufacturing; and on fixing our broken immigration system so that it grows our economy.
All these policies are overwhelmingly popular across the country and represent the kind of government that truly works to rebuild the middle class and lift up the working class. The American people want Washington to show it will finally take the long-overdue actions needed to support working families in the modern economy, to bring fairness to our tax code, and to stem the tide of pollution and climate change. Democrats can meet that challenge through unity, or they can shy away in the final stretch and feed the cynicism that so many have used to undermine our democracy. Today was a day they made the right choice.
