Washington, D.C. — Last night, news reports broke that Senate Republicans plan to filibuster the border and national security supplemental budget deal that they have been negotiating for months. This follows news that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called the bill “dead on arrival” in the House and that former President Donald Trump dissed the deal on his Truth Social platform. In response, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:
Republicans are once again revealing their true colors: talk tough on the border and national security, then run scared when given the chance to do something about it. It seems like Republicans have unlocked a new level of MAGA dysfunction: The GOP is filibustering their own bill.
Despite the fact that this bill contains policies that Republicans have clamored about for years, they are purposely tanking the deal. The only plausible explanation is that Republicans want chaos at the border. Republican intransigence on the supplemental should be seen as nothing more than a craven political calculation.
