STATEMENT: Trump’s Overtures to Black and Latino Communities are Underwhelming

Washington, D.C. – Tonight, during the first presidential debate, Republican nominee Donald Trump continued his dangerous, divisive rhetoric that has caused minorities to be disproportionately affected by policing and our criminal justice system.

Angela Kelley, the Executive Director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, responded to Trump’s claims:

At a time when tensions surrounding race relations is high, Donald Trump has continued to inflame America by proposing policies that will continue disenfranchise black and brown citizens. Donald Trump’s policies are devoid of fact and ignore the fundamental trust needed in communities between police and the citizens the serve.

Trump’s most recent call for a nationwide stop-and-frisk policy is an ignorant assessment of the lessons learned in New York where stop-and-frisk was disproportionately used against African-Americans and Latinos.

There’s is much to lose when a nation’s leader lacks clear comprehension of systemic racism in America.
