Statement: Trump’s Words All Add Up to Deportation

Washington, D.C. – Today, Republican nominee Donald Trump spoke on his immigration plan in Phoenix, Arizona after meeting with Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto. The Center for American Progress Action Fund’s Executive Director, Angela Kelley, issued a response:

“Donald Trump has dropped any pretense of offering serious reform.  Tonight’s speech was yet another reminder that he is good at pep rallies, not so much at making policy.

“As the daughter of Latino immigrants, Trump’s hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric is a dangerous and shameful tone that should send chills down the spines of all Americans

“Mr. Trump has no substantive immigration plan aside from a hardline enforcement-only position that ignores the will of the American public. His rhetoric for the past fifteen months has remained unchanged and his policy proposals remain stuck in a deportation only mode. His 10 point plan reads like a restrictionist wish list.  From promises to build a wall and deport Dreamers to keeping refugees out, he is sealing his fate with large segments of the electorate.

“His demagoguery won’t be lost on voters, but the hatred and anger that he is fueling –  damaging to our social fabric – will take real effort to heal in the months and years ahead.”
