Washington, D.C. — Today, Senate Republicans voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify the right to abortion as affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:
With today’s radical vote, Republicans in Congress have made it clear that they will follow the lead of MAGA extremists in the states—seeking to ban abortion nationwide and to criminalize women who get the reproductive health care they need.
With not a single Senate Republican voting to support codifying Roe v. Wade, as extremists on the Supreme Court prepare to overturn it, all Americans who care about our fundamental freedoms must prepare to protect those rights with their active voices in state capitols but also with the power of their votes.
This nation has proven, time and time again, it is stronger, fairer, and more productive when the rights Americans enjoy become more inclusive, not less. We can’t let MAGA Republican extremists prevail as they demonstrate every day that they will stop at nothing to turn back the clock and strip peoples’ rights away. At the ballot box, in partnership with allies in the field, and working with state and local leaders all over this country, we must meet this moment with the urgency and moral clarity it compels until abortion rights are real and permanent for all Americans.
