Washington, D.C. — In a recent interview on Newsmax, Virginia Republican Lt. Gov. candidate Winsome Sears said that she would support passing a Texas-style abortion ban in the commonwealth. Under such a ban, people would be criminalized for getting an abortion after six weeks, before many even know that they are pregnant. Jamille Fields Allsbrook, director of women’s health and rights with the Women’s Initiative at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:
For months, Virginia Republican Gov. candidate Glenn Youngkin has sought to hide his radical views on abortion from the people of Virginia, and now we know why. He refuses to repudiate even the most extreme anti-choice views, such as the Republican lieutenant governor candidate’s recent endorsement of Virginia passing a flagrantly unconstitutional Texas-style ban on abortion at just six weeks gestation, before many people even know that they are pregnant. Given his promise to not get “squishy” on attacking reproductive freedom, Virginians rightly fear that Glenn Youngkin would turn back the clock on abortion rights, injecting his own views into their most personal medical decisions and seeking to put access to safe, accessible care further out of reach for patients.
