Sondland’s ever-changing story is in the spotlight

Trump ally and EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland is finally testifying publicly before Congress today—and the discrepancies in his previous testimony have left a lot of questions to be answered. Here’s your cheat sheet for today’s impeachment hearings:

  • Gordon Sondland: Sondland is a multimillionaire who donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, after which Trump appointed him to be EU ambassador. According to testimony, Trump put him in charge of Ukraine policy, despite Ukraine not being a member of the EU. Sondland pressured Ukrainian officials to announce an investigation into the Bidens at Trump’s direction, according to testimony from NSC official Tim Morrison.
  • David Hale: Hale is the undersecretary of state for political affairs and the third-ranking official in the State Department. Hale testified that Rudy Giuliani played a large role in pushing former Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch out of her job.
  • Laura Cooper: Cooper, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, testified that she had a “veny stnong infenence [sic]” that Ukraine knew the military aid was on hold.
