Contradictory statements, proposed budget cuts, angry tweets, and chaos
Instead of addressing this deepening global health crisis, Trump has critically weakened our ability to address the spread of coronavirus. Here’s how:
- Budget cuts: Trump’s proposed budget would slash $4 billion in critical funding to the CDC and NIH. It also guts Medicaid, where millions of Americans get their health care.
- Weakened response infrastructure: Trump shut down the National Security Council’s global health security unit and never replaced the Senior Director of Global Health Security, who would be responsible for pandemic response.
- Conflicting information: Trump refuses to acknowledge the reality of the crisis. CDC officials are warning that the spread of coronavirus is incredibly serious. Trump, on the other hand, is baselessly tweeting that the virus will go away with warm weather, and is obsessed with how the stock market will react rather than how we can keep Americans safe.

Now, the Trump administration is requesting $1.25 billion in new funding to address coronavirus—an amount that Congressional leaders say is dangerously inadequate. To top it all off, Trump plans to pay for it by gutting programs that other vulnerable populations in the U.S. need.
