RELEASE: MAGA Republicans Threaten Social Security and Medicare Cuts, Higher Costs on Consumers

Washington, D.C. — MAGA Republicans are running on an increasingly extreme agenda. As a new column released today by the Center for American Progress Action Fund explains, Republican leaders are planning extreme tactics to force Social Security and Medicare cuts. As the piece notes, if MAGA Republicans don’t get their way, they are threatening to force the United States into a potentially catastrophic default on payments it owes—which would increase everyday costs for families and have devastating consequences for the economy as a whole.

The analysis looks at the exceedingly long list of Republican leaders and proposals to slash Social Security and Medicare as well as what expenses consumers could see skyrocket or benefits be denied in the event of default.

MAGA Republicans’ attacks on Medicare and Social Security stand in stark contrast to President Joe Biden’s efforts to strengthen these economic lifelines, including empowering Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices, capping out of pocket prescription drug costs for seniors, and recently announcing the largest increase in Social Security benefits in 40 years and a decline in Medicare premiums.

“Over the last 10 months, the GOP has grown increasingly bold in telegraphing their plans to cut Social Security and Medicare,” said Colin Seeberger, senior adviser for the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “The overturning of Roe v. Wade and near repeal of the Affordable Care Act should have taught us this lesson: When MAGA Republicans threaten voters’ fundamental rights and benefits, believe them.”
