Washington, D.C. — The Washington Post reported last night that Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) signed onto a letter last year urging the U.S. Department of Justice to misapply the 150-year-old Comstock Act in an attempt to restrict access nationwide to mifepristone and misoprostol, the drugs used in medication abortion. Sabrina Talukder, director of the Women’s Initiative at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, shared the following statement:
It’s clear from his record that JD Vance will do everything in his power to implement a national abortion ban. He has called for the Department of Justice to misapply the Comstock Act, a blatant attempt to upend checks and balances and ram through an extremist, backdoor abortion ban. JD Vance’s actions mirror what Project 2025 hopes to do: upend checks and balances within our democracy and strip women of the ability to control their futures.
