Summary

American Progress is seeking a highly motivated and organized professional with a strong advocacy and organizing background as well as an understanding of strategic communications to serve as the Organizing Associate for Generation Progress.

Generation Progress (GP) is a national education and advocacy organization housed within American Progress that works with and for young adults ages 18 to 35 to promote progressive solutions to key political and social challenges. GP animates the stakes of political and policy debates by driving analysis, messaging, and personal stories of key issues that demonstrate the value of progressive solutions and quantify the true cost of conservative policies through the lens of gender justice, racial justice, and LGBTQ equity.

Working in close coordination with the Energy and Environment policy team, the Organizing Associate will support efforts to increase the reach and impact of research and policy products; assist in the development and implementation of campaign plans that drive progressive climate, energy, and environmental priorities; and coordinate national and state-level partner outreach and engagement around key issues and events. The Organizing Associate will support the Energy and Environment story bank project by identifying and working with individuals who have compelling and diverse personal stories about the effects of climate change and the importance of strong environmental protections.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with GP’s organizing and communications teams, American Progress’ Energy and Environment War Room, and other policy teams to produce and distribute advocacy materials, including issue analyses, blog posts, fact sheets, video content, campaign messages, and campaign strategies that are tailored to GP’s audience.
  • Assist in the development of targeted campaigns, including strategic use of GP’s extensive email network and social media presence, and media strategies for advocacy efforts.
  • Coordinate closely with the Energy and Environment War Room team to drive GP’s youth climate campaigns in coordination with American Progress’ broader advocacy efforts.
  • Serve as the point person for the GP climate change story bank project through recruitment, stakeholder outreach, and use of customer relationship management software.
  • Participate in planning and executing substantive events, briefings, and meetings across a range of progressive organizations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent GP in partnerships and coalitions with national and state-level organizations and shepherd partner relationships and communication.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with state advocates across a range of issues.
  • Track and analyze the performance of GP projects including but not limited to events and advocacy materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of work experience in campaigns, advocacy, or related fields is preferred.
  • A strong, entrepreneurial self-starter with the motivation to engage progressive 18- to 35-year-olds nationwide.
  • A proven track record of collaborating with a diverse group of external stakeholders and advocacy groups.
  • Ability to learn new policy issues quickly and an interest in or experience with energy and environment issues.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with state, local, and national partners.
  • Ability to multitask and set priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work on a team and across organizations.
  • Ability to identify equity and opportunity gaps and build messaging rooted in principles of equity.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to write well and present ideas and arguments in a clear manner that will engage and be understood by the appropriate audience.
  • Clear verbal communication skills to share ideas in a succinct manner with audiences who may not have expert knowledge on a particular topic.
  • Ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects at once.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
