Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, July 29, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will release an issue brief in tandem with a press call at 11:00 a.m. ET on the racially disparate impacts of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s “Stand Your Ground” law. Ahead of Gov. Bush’s speech in front of the National Urban League conference this Friday, Rashad Robinson of Color of Change; Benjamin Crump of Parks and Crump Attorneys at Law; David LaBahn of the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys; and Chelsea Parsons of the Center for American Progress Action Fund will address how Gov. Bush’s 2005 law dramatically expanding the right to use lethal force in self-defense has not only placed a disproportionate burden on communities of color but also has led dozens of other states to follow suit.
In the two years after Florida’s Stand Your Ground law was signed, the number of gun-related homicides spiked by more than 200, and the state’s gun homicide rate jumped above the national average, where it remains today. Participants in tomorrow’s call will discuss this increase and the law’s disparate impact on black communities.
