Statement: Donald Trump’s Rhetoric Puts American National Security at Risk

Tonight, during the first presidential debate, Republican nominee Donald Trump failed to prove he is fit to be commander in chief.

Ken Gude, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:

“In just 30 minutes, Donald Trump managed to undermine American security by repeatedly doing Russian strongman Vladimir Putin’s work for him when he created uncertainty around US nuclear deterrence, maligned NATO, and deflected suspicion on Russian hacking of the US election. He repeatedly lied about his support for the Iraq war and the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq in 2011. He even admitted that he could be baited into launching a military strike against Iran by a few random Iranian sailors. He lacks the judgment and temperament that we need in a commander in chief who has control of the nuclear codes and can order the US military into war.”
