STATEMENT: Neera Tanden on Voters’ Historic Rebuke of Trump’s Corruption

Washington, D.C.—Neera Tanden, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, gave the following statement on voters electing a Democratic majority to the House of Representatives, new progressive governors, and countless other progressive victories across the country:

The new Democratic House will bring the era of Trump’s unchecked corruption to an end and stop his agenda of hatred in its tracks. This was also a new “Year of the Woman,” and it is appropriate that they will be the ones to finally bring some accountability to the Trump Administration. While Republicans in Congress have been spineless, women—especially women of color—have stood up to Trump time and again, ever since millions marched the day after his inauguration. Now they will do so in Congress in numbers America has never seen before.

Democrats won on an inspiring, progressive vision to make government work for the people again, and Americans delivered an historic rebuke to the shameless Republican culture of corruption that has taken over Washington. After two years where Republicans focused on robbing people of health care while enriching their donors and themselves, this new majority can get to work making health care more affordable, making sure the economy benefits working people and not just the wealthy, and passing an aggressive anti-corruption agenda. America has shown itself to be better than President Trump’s desperate campaign of fear, hatred and division.
