The best response to Trump’s racism

It’s another day in Trump’s America—and another day to stand up for what’s right. Get the facts to fight back.

Here’s how we fight Trump’s racism

When Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) returned to Minnesota last night after enduring a week of Trump’s and his supporters’ racist anger, it was to crowds chanting “Welcome home!

This week, the worst of Trump’s racism was front and center. The worst of his Republican enablers were, too.

But Rep. Omar’s words are a reminder of the best way we can fight back against Trump’s hatred and divisiveness: “We are going to continue to be a nightmare to this president, because his policies are a nightmare to us, and we are not deterred. We are not frightened.”

That’s what the progressive movement is about. We value diversity, and we won’t stand by while Trump tries to bully any of us.

Big progressive ideas

While Trump gives racist speeches and attacks health care, the nation’s progressive leaders are putting forward aspirational and innovative plans to tackle the challenges Americans face every day:

  • Raising the minimum wage: Yesterday, House Democrats (with the help of three Republicans) passed the Raise the Wage Act, a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024 and boost incomes for 40 million American workers. The bill would benefit 33% of Latinx workers and 38% of African American workers in the U.S.
  • Lowering drug prices: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) rolled out a plan to lower drug prices and hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for price gouging: “We need to make sure the health care system works for everyone and we will start by actually holding drug companies accountable for their predatory practices and ensuring that people have access to safe and affordable drugs.”
  • Codifying rights for domestic workers: Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) introduced the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Act, which would provide labor protections for domestic workers like housekeepers. The bills would provide domestic workers with federal labor protections and include new benefits including “guaranteed paid time off, privacy protection, and a written employment contract.”
  • Eliminating racial disparities in education: Education is a powerful driver of prosperity—from boosting incomes to increasing participation in our democracy. The Center for American Progress laid out a bold agenda last week to address serious, prohibitive racial disparities in our education system.
