Summary
American Progress is seeking a Senior Director for its Digital Communications team to drive the organization’s social media, email, and digital marketing efforts to advance and amplify the organization’s policy initiatives and events. This position will draw heavily on colleagues’ expertise in social media, email strategy, audience acquisition, digital fundraising, and analytics to play an integral role within American Progress’ broader digital engagement capabilities. Working across the organization, this individual will collaborate extensively with the Digital Technology, Creative, Media, Events, Advocacy, and policy teams, as well as other key stakeholders, to ensure American Progress’ digital presence successfully elevates its policy priorities and strategic plan.
The ideal candidate will provide strategic vision and creative leadership for the Digital Communications team, bringing a strong blend of creative, technological, and marketing expertise to the role. They will also have a proven track record of executing multiplatform digital strategies within policy- or advocacy-driven organizations. Additionally, the successful candidate must be able to thrive in a collaborative, mission-driven organization with the progressive values of American Progress.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all of American Progress’ social media and email efforts to raise public awareness and support for the organization’s policy work, events program, and other American Progress initiatives.
- Manage strategic digital campaigns incorporating all aspects of digital delivery and engagement, including social media, email, and web, to respond to online conversations and news cycles in real time.
- Work closely with the Creative team to develop targeted content that resonates with online audiences.
- Work with the Digital Technology team to develop benchmarks to measure the tangible impact of digital engagement, adjusting strategies and tactics accordingly.
- Utilize audience research to identify, engage with, and grow American Progress’ audiences for key issues.
- Direct and manage colleagues’ work on cross-team projects, ensuring accountability for on-time delivery and clear communication.
- Resolve complex issues independently within program areas and organizational priorities.
- Stay up to date on digital marketing and engagement best practices; make changes to vehicles, practices, training, and processes accordingly; and communicate opportunities to colleagues.
- Align team efforts around organizational goals and brand guidelines.
- Support the Digital Communications team in creating content for social media and email channels.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
Experience and background
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- At least 10 years of relevant working experience in social media, email marketing, and digital strategy.
- Experience making political or policy ideas resonate online.
Leadership and project management
- Experience managing, mentoring, and leading a team of digital staff.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple lines of effort on different deadlines in a given day or week.
Craft and judgment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong eye for visual content.
- Sound editorial and ethical judgment.
Data and tools
- Fluency with digital analytics—pulling reports, analyzing, sharing, and interpreting data across common channels and platforms.
- Familiarity with Google Analytics, Meltwater, native platform-specific analytics (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram), Sprout Social, and HubSpot, or similar tools.
