Maya A. Beasley is a Fellow with the Progress 2050 team at American Progress. She is an associate professor in the department of sociology at the University of Connecticut and the co-founder and principal of The T10 Group LLC, a diversity consulting firm. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University. Her first book, Opting Out: Losing the Potential of America’s Young Black Elite, was published in November 2011 by The University of Chicago Press. She is currently finishing her second book, The Social Portfolio: Building Up and On The Capital of Minority and Female Professionals, which examines the occupational portfolios of women and people of color in contemporary American society.

In addition to her research, Beasley has consulted on a variety of issues in the private and nonprofit sectors. Some of her most recent work involved analysis of the search processes used by major environmental nongovernmental organizations and grant makers as well as the executive search firms with which they contract to fill leadership positions. Beasley currently serves as the research director for the Diversity 360 Initiative, which releases an annual “State of Diversity in Technology Report.” As a result of her work on diversity issues, Beasley has provided guest blogs and interviews for a variety of outlets including The New York Times, HuffPost Live, The Baltimore Sun, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today and has been a featured speaker at a variety of events such as Catalyst and Platform.
