Eric Helvey is the chief software architect at American Progress, supporting the organization’s various online properties. His expertise includes software development primarily using PHP, Perl, JavaScript, and Python; Unix system administration; database design and development; and operational support.

Prior to joining American Progress, Helvey was the primary developer and chief technology office for Swapasap, a Paris-based startup focused on language learning by facilitating cultural immersion experiences. From 2006 to 2011, he worked with the Alexandria, Virginia-based Mandiant Corporation, developing and supporting its enterprise cybersecurity product Mandiant Intelligent Response, or MIR. From 1999 through 2011, Helvey was the technical lead for an embedded software development team that supported Sprint’s Long Distance operations centers.

Helvey earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering/computer science from Ohio University in 1998, a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Tufts University in 1993, and a diploma from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria in 1989.

Helvey lives near Mount Vernon, Virginia, and can often be found spending his evenings supporting his children’s after-school sports teams.
