Expertise: Public lands, energy and environmental policy

Kate Kelly is the director of Public Lands at American Progress. Prior to joining American Progress, Kelly served as senior adviser to then-Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell. In this role, Kelly oversaw the communications and outreach strategy for major conservation, energy, and climate initiatives, including the Obama administration’s Sage Grouse Initiative—the largest landscape-level conservation effort in U.S. history; the launch of the federal coal program review; and policies to strengthen the outdoor economy.

At the U.S. Department of the Interior, Kelly also served as communications director on behalf of Secretary Jewell and former Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, where she worked on a wide variety of issues, including the department’s groundbreaking work to permit renewable energy projects on public lands and oceans and to tell a more inclusive story of America through national parks and monuments.

Prior to her time in the Obama administration, Kelly worked in the U.S. Senate as press secretary for Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA). Kelly received her bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and hails from Colorado.
