Expertise: Faith-based advocacy, religious liberty, reproductive justice, economic inequality

Claire Markham is the associate director for the Faith and Progressive Policy Initiative at American Progress. She focuses on integrating faith and values in policy work; ensuring faith-based advocates have the resources to do their best work; elevating progressive voices of faith to complicate divisive policy conversations; and advancing equality for all with an intersectional framework driven by faith. Previously, she served as the Initiative’s outreach and campaigns manager, working to increase partnerships with faith-based organizations, faith communities, and progressive people of faith across a variety of American Progress’ policy areas.

Prior to joining American Progress, Markham worked as the field associate and minimum-wage lobbyist for NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, the organization behind Nuns on the Bus. Earlier in her career, she worked in Catholic education as a high school teacher and college campus minister, where she came to understand the importance of political activism and public policy work as natural extensions of a rich spiritual life.

Markham holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from Boston College and a master’s degree in theology from Catholic Theological Union.
